For anybody who likes to drink soda/soda pop/*sweet (generally) refreshing beverages , this is YOUR thread !!!!!!!!!!! *-No need to get hung up (maaaan) on regional differentiations in exact terminology , right ? You know what I mean ? Um , perhaps that's not the best choice of word there , either... Some years ago , Diet Coke(C) changed their label design from a somewhat more light shade to a darker tone...and it appears , in fact , they made their taste a little " darker " less bubbly then , too . A while ago I found an old bottle in the old design in a store , and it tasted that way...

On deadline days my body is fueled with Classic Coke, Hershey bars with almonds and unfiltered Camels. I've got the cavities and the cough to prove it, too.
The stuff I really used to love when I was a teenager in Michigan was Vernor's ginger ale. That stuff was LOADED with ginger flavor and enough carbonation to make it an asthma attack in a can. I mean you really had to drink it carefully otherwise you'd be snorting ginger ale out your nose which, I can attest, hurts a lot. It's since been dumbed down, just another soft drink. A great loss to the Midwest's soda pop drinkers.

Never was a big soda drinker anyway, and then when I became a diabetic, I had to make the decision whether to go the diet soda route or just drink bottled water and club soda instead. I made the later choice, and have never really regretted it.

I understand Coke Zero is almost the exact same thing as Diet Coke, intended to appeal to guys who are watching their weight and won't buy anything with a "Diet" label, which implies a female slant. And Coke gets more shelf space at the supermarket.
My favorite is Diet A&W Root Beer.

Finally a drink thread I can relate to!
Anyway I drink Coke and Sprite, which is by the same company. It's something of a legacy of being born in the South. When one of my siblings switched to Pepsi it actually felt like a bit of a betrayal. I did drink RC during the New Coke period and sometimes in High School.
Several of my childhood and adolescent memories involve Coke. Before he retired my Dad was sometimes a bit distant and one of the first times I remember having fun with him was over Coke and Kit Kat candy bars. In High School I impressed the only girl I know with osteogenesis imperfecta by opening up a can of Coke on my own. (Not "impressed a girl" in that way, she's like a kid and I wouldn't date an OI. It was just impressive as the condition involves a certain weakness and my arms tend to be weaker than my legs) And there's probably others.
Unfortunately I have the distinct feeling we're "the next smokers." Doomed to be overtaxed and lectured too even by drunken yahoos with beer bellies. Still I do think I should probably drink less soda and that maybe it should be seen as more of a "treat" or "dessert drink" than an everyday thing. Or maybe they could find a way to add some vitamins to it without ruining the flavor. You'd think they could make an "Orange Sprite" with Vitamin C or something.

Long, long ago, before being eaten by Cadbury, Schweppes made a very spicy ginger beer I liked. It came in squat dark brown bottles whose caps had cork inside. The stuff also foamed up nicely (though the foam collapsed fairly quickly). IIRC, the foam was enhanced by a botanical ingredient called "quillaia extract."
There is (or at least used to be) an "organic" brand called Journey that a local health food store used to carry, and their ginger brew was pretty spicy -- my second favorite after the old Schweppes ginger beer.
Stewart's Ginger Beer is fairly spicy, though alas it's made with high-fructose corn syrup. I haven't seen it around lately.
Vernors is not as spicy as Stewart's but it's also not insipid. Its distinctive flavor is (or at least used to be) due to aging the stuff in oak. Not as spicy as some, but certainly not bad. I had some not too many years ago, and it still had something of the flavor I remembered from days gone by.
Around 20 years ago or so, I used to drink Jolt Cola -- Real sugar and twice the caffeine! I don't know if it's even made any more -- the so-called "energy drinks" have pretty much taken over its former place in the market.
There's a grapefruit-flavored soda called Squirt I used to like. There used to be a somewhat similar soda called Canfield's 50/50, but I haven't seen that in ages.
Nowadays, I mostly drink water at times I used to drink soda. I don't burn the calories like I used to, and the water at drinking fountains is free.

Sometimes I worry I mention it too much. In the first couple years here I didn't mention it all. Anyway here is some about OI. It might make it sound worse than it's been for me, but then again maybe not. A fair amount die before age 10, but if you survive to puberty you have some shot at living a near-normal lifespan. Provided you don't get in a car accident, have severe pneumonia, or develop skull/spine problems. I have had a pneumonia shot and try not to let any young childless people drive me if I can avoid it. (Young childless people are, I believe, the most reckless drivers on average)
Oddly it does relate to why I drink coke. In my first years I had some colon problems or was too weak to go regularly and Coke was seen as useful on that. Maybe that's TMI. edited by Thomas R on 10/29/2009

While in Scotland, I did try Irn-Bru, which, as they say is made frae girrrrders. And pretty much does taste like carbonated girder.
Rum and Coke can be tasty, but as whole, I'm not much of a soda pop drinker.
Lately, I've become pretty fond of Pellegrino Sparkling Water, which is about as close to soda as I get these days.

In the South, there's no such thing as "pop" or "soda," only Coke. You want something else, go somewhere else.
The new Coke museum opened in Atlanta a few years back, and I have to say that I liked the old Coke museum better. The highlight is tasting Coca-Cola carbonated beverages from around the world. My favorite is an orange-pineapple concoction from South America, which I've never been able to find in the States. My least favorite is "Beverly," which is bitter. I hope it wasn't named after some Coke exec's ex-wife. edited by Jeffhaas on 10/29/2009

Is that a steel girder, a solid timber beam or a glue-lam girder? How do you carbonate such a thing, much less drink it?

I never understood the appeal of a cola. generally preferred a Lemon-Lime sort of soda. Almost never drink soda, anymore, and go for an ice tea if it's too early for wine.
The mention of A&W brings to mind the halcyon days of the A&W drive-in, when a car hop set out a frosty mug of root beer float, on a hot summer day. Truly the greatest root beer ever. The flavor doesn't quite translate to the can; but it's still about the best canned root beer.
And then, of course, there was the ritual scheming to steal one of their glorious 16 oz, heavy glass mugs. There's nothing that proclaims "class" at a Kegger like drinking from a fine piece of purloined glassware while the hoi polloi suffers plastic cups. I had one for years andyears, until it got broken in some tragic drunken calamity. (or a dishwashing disaster... I forget which)

I've been advised by my physician not to drink sweetened sodas, so now I only drink beer.
But when I was a kid, my favorite flavor of soda was black-cherry wishniak. Anybody ever had a wishniak?

Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak? Had it many times. Were you living in or around eastern PA? Never seen it anywhere else.

Iron. You know those rust streaks that form on girders left out in the rain too long? Irn-Bru looks sort of like someone caught the drips from beneath the streaks and carbonated it.
As a kid, 7-up was the folk remedy for upset tummy. To this day, I can't drink it without being reminded of vomit. An unfortunate incident involving a Cub Scout field trip gone wrong and a ruined back seat of a station wagon similarly has ruined Spanish Rice for me.
